Leilah King: We Are Hungry for Androgyny Book Launch

Join us to celebrate the launch of Leilah King's poetry collection ‘We Are Hungry for Androgyny’

We Are Hungry for Androgyny is filled with wit, chaos, beauty and rage. In her second collection Leilah King shares her experiences navigating the world as a butch, half-Iranian gay woman. Her poems touch on her dual heritage and her experience of queerness. She explores how these identities intersect, balancing the expectations of her Persian heritage with her sexuality and gender nonconformity.

Leilah will be reading poems from the book, discussing her work and taking questions with Laurie Gallagher.

After the event, there'll be time to mingle with music provided by LEXX, creator and DJ of Soft Butch Bristol.

Leilah will be signing books at the end of the event.

“An important addition to the queer canon, celebrating and detailing the wide cinema of us”
— Joelle Taylor, poet and playwright

“Original, open-eyed and luminous, these poems are a testament to curiosity and learning. With sharp flashes of song and humour, We Are Hungry for Androgyny zigzags between the personal, the political and all the places they meet”
— Sophia Blackwell, poet and author

“We Are Hungry For Androgyny oozes emotional gravity and humour. Like good football, Leilah’s poems swerve and ascend, only to land at exactly where they should. King possesses such command over her material, this collection is like a warm clever friend. One who surprises me with their intimate and intricately shaped stories”
— Karen McLeod, writer and performer

“This collection is so full and whole. Leilah honours all of her identities in ways that most people only dream of. Her poetry is a roadmap for self-acceptance, true, brutal, yet, warm and comforting”
— Muneera Pilgrim, poet, cultural producer, writer, broadcaster and speaker

Leilah King is a half-Iranian queer footballer, mental health advocate, and stand-up poet. Her debut poetry collection Midnight Picnics in Tehran was published by Burning Eye Books. She is the co-founder and host of Time of the Month Open Mic, a nurturing and supportive performance space for female/ trans/nonbinary/GNC performers in Bristol.

Leilah grew up in Wales and started writing poetry in her teens as an escape from her feelings of alienation. Football has been part of her life since she was six. Attending Bristol Academy, Leilah has played for various teams including Brighton and Hove Albion as well as in the Welsh Premier League. She is now an FA-accredited coach.  Leilah featured in Rosemary Baker’s Channel 4 film showcasing Lisa Luxx’s poem ‘Lesbian’. She was commissioned to write poems about football for Nationwide’s Voices campaign.

Headline performances include Bristol Old Vic, Poetry Café in London, Leeds Poetry Festival, WOMAD Festival and Cheltenham Literature Festival. Leilah’s poetry is inspired by her Iranian heritage. Leilah’s mum is from Shiraz. Her grandfather was a notable Ayatollah, writer and poet. Leilah spent many childhood summers in bustling Tehran and wandering the beautiful parks in the city of poets, Shiraz. Today, Leilah’s work interweaves themes of patriarchy, discrimination and mental health, in reference to her experience as a gender non-conforming queer woman.

Laurie Gallagher is a Bristol butch who completed a degree in literature many years ago and still loves to read and memorise poetry. Laurie is currently working in mental health while training as a child and adolescent psychotherapist.

Cosy Autumn Gig w/ Lorcán + pictureframes

A cosy autumn gig is heading in your direction, and we’ve got some treats in store…

TICKETS

First up, this event is fundraising for the Aid Box Community, with all profits going into their pocket. If you haven’t heard of them, this is what they get up to:

“Our Mission is to provide a warm welcome to people seeking asylum in Bristol and to offer the support they need to access living essentials, emotional support, recreation, shelter, community, legal advice, health care and employment.”

Pretty great right? Go check out what else they have to say and the excellent work they do on their website -
www.aidboxcommunity.co.uk

It’s getting darker, colder, and wetter, so come together and warm up in the cosy embrace of the Kino basement. It will be a night of wholesome music accompanied by analogue projections and excellent chat.

Soundtracking the evening we have top quality local acts Lorcán and pictureframes bringing some luscious warm sounds.

Lorcán is a Bristol-based ambient-dream pop artist. After making his release debut in 2020 with a series of home-recorded singles, he and his band have been making themselves known in the UK music scene. There is a DIY and experimental spirit to his music that echoes the radical music scene of the city he grew up in, with hints to Irish folk sensibilities, learned from growing up as a second-generation immigrant in a musical Irish family. Combining his naturalistic voice with twanging guitars, ethereal synthesizers, and the occasional thumping drum machine, Lorcán and his bands music has an essence truly its own.

pictureframes are a four-piece guitar pop project based between Bristol and Bath. Inspired by a shared love of minimal arrangements and simple melodies that conjure the changing rhythms of the natural world. quiet songs for an unquiet time.

We have some other fun surprises and plans in the works, so come along!

Cuculi X Chorus Presents: Lon Dubh

Cuculi Records & CHORUS are delighted to present their first ever collaborative event, bringing together their favourite picks from the grassroots songwriting networks of Bristol & Totnes. For this first one, we're welcoming fierce & graceful vocal trio Lon Dubh (meaning 'blackbird' in Irish) - a supergroup of sorts featuring respected songwriters Branwen Kavanagh, Anna Ling & Hannah Partridge. We're thrilled to get a performance from this incredible project in such an intimate venue. Support from Bristol-based songwriter/vocalist/storyteller Suzi MacGregor.

Cuculi shows usually sell out, so we strongly recommend buying tickets in advance .

LON DUBH

Lon Dubh are three part harmony singers of hypnotic original songs inspired by landscapes of Ireland and its ancient folklore. Expect carefully crafted songs for three voices that sound like they’ve always existed.

Hailing from Ireland and England, Lon Dubh are Branwen Kavanagh, Anna Ling and Hannah Partridge. All three are established solo artists in their own right, drawing upon folk traditions in their own unique ways. Branwen Kavanagh is a prolific composer and songwriter, musician, sculptor, storyteller, puppeteer, visual artist, writer of surreal visual plays and a lively adventurer from the West of Ireland. Most of the songs the trio will sing are Branwens original compositions.

Anna Ling is a playful and poetic singer/songwriter, choir leader, and music teacher who connects audiences with her engaging charisma and sing-a-long sections. She’s influenced by a strong connection to traditional British folk music and a long-running fascination with weird and wonderful singing styles from across the globe.

Hannah Partridge is a folk musician and arts producer, folding traditional celtic tunes into her songwriting and supporting fellow women and non-binary artists through creative projects. She’s never far away from storytelling lyricism and enigmatic melodies.

Between them Branwen, Anna and Hannah have a wealth of experience in the folk/alt scenes playing at festivals and venues across the country. The trio have been deepening their sound at an old mill in the South Devon countryside this year, and are now embarking on their first UK tour. Summer 2023 saw their first international performance as a trio at Stimmen Festival Ettiswil in Switzerland.

***

Suzi MacGregor is a versatile vocalist, performer, and writer, making solo and collaborative music with crossovers into theatre. She’s performed professionally, in the UK and internationally, for 15 years, developing her practise as a songwriter, vocal mentor, and performance artist. Her voice and composition style range from the ethereal folk-tones of Joni Mitchell to the more ballad-pop style akin to singer and composer Sara Bareilles. Currently based in Bristol, she is writing a one-woman musical funded by Arts Council England and is regularly performing with Cove Jam & Tryani Collective. She is drawn to the connections between singing, wild places, and play.
